Oregon's ORS 455.573 (2009) requires public buildings built on or after January 1, 2010, or whose attached outdoor fixtures are replaced after that date, to use shielded fixtures to the greatest practicable extent. Cities and counties may set stricter rules or waive it for a building, such as a historic one. Private lighting is not covered statewide. Deschutes County has its own code.

Municipal codes
- Deschutes County (opens in new tab): County Code Chapter 15.10 requires fully shielded, downcast fixtures with no light trespass. Replacement fixtures installed from December 23, 2025 must comply, and all other fixtures by December 23, 2028. Residential string lights go off by 11 p.m.
