Michigan has four certified dark sky places in our directory: three dark sky parks and one dark sky sanctuary.
The names to know: Headlands (certified 2011), Keweenaw Dark Sky Park (certified 2022), and Beaver Island State Wildlife Research Area (certified 2024).
The DarkSky International place types guide (opens in new tab) describes a dark sky park as land with notably dark, star-filled skies that is protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural or recreational value.
For the darkest nights, plan around the calendar: the National Park Service says the darkest skies come during a new moon or when the moon is below the horizon (opens in new tab). On clear, moonless summer nights the Milky Way looks densest, while winter brings Orion and the Pleiades, according to Great Basin National Park (opens in new tab).

Dr. T.K. Lawless County Park is a Cass County, Michigan park near Jones, certified as a Dark Sky Park in 2019. Admission is $3 for county residents and $5 for others, and hours are posted at the park. It has seven miles of hiking trails and two picnic shelters with electricity; the county page lists no camping, so call ahead before planning an overnight.
Headlands International Dark Sky Park is a lakeshore park at 15675 Headlands Rd near Mackinaw City, Michigan, designated in 2011. The grounds are open 24 hours every day, but camping is not allowed. White light is banned in the viewing area, red-filtered flashlights are sold on site, and the shore runs about 10 degrees colder than expected.
Keweenaw Dark Sky Park, certified in 2022, is headquartered at Keweenaw Mountain Lodge at the top of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. Stargazing is offered year-round, with dates on the lodge calendar. The lodge rents 24 cabins (27 units, one to three bedrooms) that must be booked in advance, and walk-ins are not accepted; the site does not list camping.
Beaver Island State Wildlife Research Area is a dark sky sanctuary on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan, Michigan, certified in 2024. It covers 9,195.5 acres of the research area plus 230 acres at Miller's Marsh, at 29200 West Side Road, Beaver Island. Vehicle access on the island is limited, so check how you will get around before you go.
