Montana has no statewide outdoor lighting, light pollution, or dark-sky statute. Several cities regulate fixture shielding and glare through their own zoning codes instead.
Municipal codes
- Missoula: City lighting ordinance (No. 3341) sets shielding and glare standards for new outdoor fixtures.
- Whitefish: Municipal code section 11-3-25 sets outdoor lighting standards for new development.
- Great Falls: Code chapter 40 regulates outdoor lighting, including special standards for special applications.
- Livingston: Code chapter 18, locally titled the "Night Sky Protection Act," regulates outdoor lighting fixtures citywide.
- Kalispell: Municipal code sets outdoor lighting standards for commercial and residential fixtures.
