A computer scientist at Sandia National Laboratories has built an automated observatory using off-the-shelf technology to track satellites. This project is exciting for sky-watchers because it shows how accessible and affordable it can be to contribute to the field of astronomy. The use of off-the-shelf technology makes it possible for others to replicate similar projects, allowing for a wider range of people to participate in satellite tracking and astronomy research.
