Illinois

Illinois has no general outdoor lighting law. Its Bird-Safe State Buildings section (P.A. 102-119, effective January 1, 2022) requires outside lighting on newly built, acquired, or heavily altered (over 50 percent of the facade) state buildings to be shielded and minimized, and calls for timers and sensors to cut exterior lighting on state buildings where practicable. Leased and historic buildings, including the Capitol, are exempt.
