Below is a province-by-province rundown of every one, what makes each worth the drive, and where to plan a trip around it; the full, filterable roster with coordinates and certification years lives on our [places directory](/places).\n\n## RASC Dark-Sky Preserves vs. DarkSky International Designations\n\nTwo different organizations certify dark-sky sites in Canada, and they are not interchangeable.\n\n**RASC**, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, runs a Canada-only program that predates DarkSky International's presence in the country and still certifies most Canadian sites today. Per [RASC's designation page](https://rasc.ca/dark-sky-site-designations), its three tiers are:\n\n- **Dark-Sky Preserve (DSP):** the strictest tier, where no artificial lighting is visible and the site actively promotes reducing light pollution.\n- **Urban Star Park (USP):** a park inside or near a city where lighting is tightly controlled even though some sky glow may still be visible.\n- **Nocturnal Preserve (NP):** focused on protecting nighttime wildlife habitat rather than astronomy access.\n\n**DarkSky International** (formerly the International Dark-Sky Association) runs the worldwide certification that most Canadian national parks and a growing number of provincial parks now carry alongside, or instead of, a RASC designation. Three regional county municipalities, the [MRC du Granit](https://www.cieletoilemontmegantic.org/en/reglementations), MRC du Haut-Saint-François, and the city of Sherbrooke, each passed their own lighting bylaws that jointly protect the [Mont-Mégantic International Dark Sky Reserve](https://www.omm-astro.ca/en/the-observatory/international-dark-sky-reserve/), established in 2007. Together the rules:\n\n- Cap outdoor light color temperature at 2200K or less (a warm, amber-toned light).\n- Limit upward light spill, the light that escapes above the horizontal, to 1 to 2.5 percent of a fixture's output.\n- Impose evening curfews, generally 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., on non-essential outdoor lighting.\n\nThese bylaws are why the ASTROLab observatory at the heart of the reserve can still deliver research-grade dark skies within driving distance of Montreal and Sherbrooke.
