## Dark Sky Certifications: DarkSky International vs. RASC

Two organizations certify dark sky places in North America, and their categories are not interchangeable.

**DarkSky International** (formerly the International Dark-Sky Association) runs the certification most US parks and Canadian national parks carry. Its main categories are [defined as](https://darksky.org/what-we-do/international-dark-sky-places/dark-sky-place-types/):

- **Dark Sky Park:** publicly or privately owned land protected for its night sky, where the landowner guarantees permanent public access.
- **Dark Sky Sanctuary:** the most remote and fragile category, land so isolated that few threats to its darkness exist.
- **Dark Sky Reserve:** a large protected core zone surrounded by a populated periphery, run by a partnership of multiple land managers under shared lighting rules.
- **Dark Sky Community:** an entire town or municipality that enforces a dark-sky-friendly outdoor lighting ordinance.
